The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) originally planned and developed Mayur Vihar as one of the best residential areas in the city. This was conceptualized and developed in 1979-80, when trans-Yamuna area was not much densely populated.

This plan was a part of the experiment to integrate people belonging to various economic bracket into into three parts or phases and had flats constructed under the supervision of the Group Housing Societies (GHS).
