Moving from India to the UAE: cost, transit time and customs

The short answer

  • A 2BHK (≈18 CBM) usually ships in a 20ft container for about ₹1.8–2.8 lakh door to door; a 1BHK by LCL is about ₹1.3–2.1 lakh.
  • Sea freight to Jebel Ali takes just 4–7 days port to port — about 15–25 days door to door by FCL and 25–40 days by LCL. Air takes 3–7 days.
  • Customs needs your passport, residence visa (or entry permit), a detailed inventory and the bill of lading. Clearance is done through a local agent.
  • Used household goods of new residents are generally exempt from duty; otherwise 5% customs duty on assessed value can apply.

Prices are indicative door-to-door ranges in INR, excluding duties, destination inspection fees and insurance. Get an exact figure with the cost calculator or a free survey.

How much does it cost to move from India to the UAE?

For most families, a door-to-door move from India to the UAE costs between ₹1.3–2.1 lakh for a 1BHK and ₹2.8–4 lakh for a 4BHK. Volume, not weight, drives the price for sea freight.

Home size Typical volume Usual method Indicative cost (door to door)
1BHK / studio ≈10.3 CBM LCL (shared container) ₹1.3–2.1 lakh
2BHK ≈18.3 CBM 20ft container (FCL) ₹1.8–2.8 lakh
3BHK ≈27.7 CBM 20ft container (FCL) — full load ₹1.8–2.8 lakh
4BHK / villa ≈40.3 CBM 40ft container (FCL) ₹2.8–4 lakh
Air — essentials only ≈250 kg Air freight ₹62k–₹100k

Volumes are Pikkol's standard averages for Indian homes. Your actual volume depends on furniture, books and appliances — a written survey fixes it. LCL is priced per CBM; containers are priced per box. Excludes duties/taxes, destination exam or inspection fees, storage and insurance (typically 3% of declared value).

Rates used: LCL ₹13,000–20,000 per CBM; 20ft ₹180,000–280,000; 40ft ₹280,000–400,000; air ₹250–400/kg chargeable. Replace with approved rates.

Should you ship LCL or a full container to the UAE?

LCL suits up to roughly 13 CBM and is the most common choice on this corridor. Consolidation services to Jebel Ali run frequently from western and southern Indian ports.

A 20ft FCL wins from about 14 CBM, and because the voyage is short, the gain is mostly in handling and privacy, not speed.

Air is surprisingly competitive for small volumes. Flights between India and the UAE are frequent, and for under 200 kg a door-to-door air shipment can cost close to LCL and arrive in a few days.

Not sure? The Sea vs Air, LCL vs FCL guide recommends a method from your volume, deadline and fragile items.

How long does shipping from India to the UAE take?

Plan for 15–25 days door to door by full container, 25–40 days by LCL, and 3–7 days by air. Here's where the time goes:

Stage Typical time
Survey, quote and packing date fixed 1–2 weeks before packing
Packing, export customs, loading 2–5 days
Ocean voyage to Jebel Ali / Khalifa 4–7 days
UAE customs clearance (after visa stamping) 3–7 days
Delivery, incl. building move-in permit 1–5 days

Transit times vary with sailing schedules, transhipment, peak season and customs selection. Your coordinator shares the vessel and ETA once booked.

Which customs documents do you need for the UAE?

Keep these ready. Pikkol prepares the inventory and customs forms from your packing list, but some can only come from you.

Do you pay customs duty on household goods in the UAE?

Used personal and household effects of people moving to the UAE to live are generally exempt from customs duty. Customs usually expects to see your residence visa, so ship after your visa is in process.

If the exemption doesn't apply, UAE customs duty is generally 5% of the assessed value. New goods in the shipment can be charged.

Controlled medicines need prior approval. Some common prescriptions in India are controlled in the UAE — check before you pack any.

Alcohol shipments are restricted and depend on the emirate. Tobacco above personal limits is dutiable.

Customs rules change. This summary reflects official guidance as of 28 September 2026; the officer's decision at clearance is final. See sources below.

What can't you ship from India to the UAE?

Leave these out of your household shipment, or check with us first:

  • Narcotics and many controlled medicines without a MOHAP permit
  • Pork products
  • Publications, images or items considered offensive to religion or public morals
  • Weapons, ammunition, fireworks and laser pens
  • Counterfeit goods
  • Hazardous goods: aerosols, fuel, gas cylinders, paint

Appliances, cars and pets: what's different for the UAE?

Electronics and appliances

The UAE uses 230V/50Hz with Type G (UK-style) plugs, so Indian appliances generally work with an adapter. Large appliances are often provided in rentals and are reasonably priced locally — check with our Ship, Sell or Store tool.

Cars

UAE vehicles are left-hand drive, and right-hand drive Indian cars generally cannot be registered for regular use. Sell your car in India and buy in the UAE.

Pets

Dogs and cats need a UAE import permit from MOCCAE, a microchip, rabies vaccination and a rabies antibody (titre) test. Some breeds are banned. Plan 2–4 months ahead with our pet relocation team.

Building move-in rules

Most Dubai and Abu Dhabi communities require a move-in permit and fix delivery windows. Tell us your community early so the truck isn't turned away.

Pikkol's Take

Ship less, and ship after your visa.

The UAE is close, quick and easy to furnish. Many apartments come with appliances and good furniture is affordable, so unless you are setting up a home you'll keep for three years or more, LCL or a well-planned air shipment is usually the smarter spend than a full container.

Timing matters more than speed here. Ship so that goods reach Jebel Ali after your residence visa is stamped — otherwise you can end up paying storage or duty while you wait. And check your medicines against the UAE's controlled list before a single box is packed.
