Editor notes (v1, 5 October 2026): New top-level service page at /settling-in-services. Add it to the main Services menu next to International Moving, Domestic Moving, Storage, Pet Relocation and Vehicle Relocation. Title 59 characters; description 151 characters. Yellow items are placeholders: cities, package durations and prices, partner arrangements (immigration lawyer, school consultant, outbound partners), and anything Pikkol can't yet prove. Fix the conflict on the existing guide (Pikkol_Settling-In_Destination_Support_Page): its "What Pikkol handles" table says visas, tax IDs, bank accounts and school admissions "remain yours", which contradicts this page. Retitle it "Settling in abroad" and link both ways. Submit in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; add to /llms.txt. Spoke pages to build next are listed in the brief.

Settling-in services in India: visa, home, school and everyday setup

The short answer

Pikkol's settling-in services help people relocating to India, or between Indian cities, get from arrival to everyday life in weeks rather than months. One coordinator handles five things:

  • Visa and immigration: documents, e-FRRO registration (generally within 14 days of arrival for long-term visas) and extensions.
  • Home search: needs brief, shortlist, viewings, lease review and move-in.
  • School search: curriculum match, visits and admissions.
  • Settling-in: city orientation, PAN, bank account, mobile SIM, utilities and help at home.
  • Departure services: lease closure, deposit recovery, handover and exit.

Combine them with Pikkol's moving, storage, pet and vehicle services, so delivery lands the week your lease starts.

What do Pikkol's settling-in services include?

Each service can be booked on its own or as part of a package. Companies usually pick a package per employee grade; individuals usually start with home search and the settling-in essentials.

Who are settling-in services for?

Foreign employees and families

On assignment or a local hire in India. Registration, a home in the right commute zone, a school seat and a working bank account, fast.

1. Visa and immigration support, including e-FRRO registration

Foreign nationals on long-term visas, such as employment, student, research or medical visas, generally must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival, as endorsed on their visa. Registration and visa extensions are done online through the e-FRRO portal. OCI cardholders don't need to register.

India's immigration law changed on 1 September 2025, when the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 replaced four older laws, including the Foreigners Act, 1946 and the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939. It tightened registration and reporting for foreigners, employers, universities, hospitals and anyone providing accommodation.

What Pikkol does

  • Checks visa documents with you and your employer before you fly
  • Prepares and submits your e-FRRO registration, and books and attends any in-person appointment
  • Tracks visa validity and files extensions in time
  • Reminds your landlord or hotel to file the foreign-guest report (Form III, earlier Form C)
  • Registers family members on dependent visas

Good to know

  • The registration deadline is set by your visa endorsement; don't wait for your home to be ready
  • You'll need a local address and rental agreement or hotel confirmation for registration
  • Complex cases (status changes, refusals) go to a licensed immigration lawyer
  • This is guidance, not legal advice

2. Home search: finding the right home in an Indian city

Most families sign a lease within 2–4 weeks: a needs brief before you arrive, one or two days of accompanied viewings, then negotiation and move-in. Staying in a serviced apartment for the first few weeks lets you choose a neighbourhood after you've tested the commute.

  1. Needs brief: budget, commute, school, size, furnished or not, pets, parking, power backup and water supply.
  2. Area orientation and shortlist of pre-checked homes.
  3. Accompanied viewings, with notes and photos of each.
  4. Negotiation and lease review: rent, security deposit, lock-in, notice period, maintenance charges, repairs and deposit deductions.
  5. Agreement and registration in the right format for your state and lease length, and the foreign-tenant report if applicable.
  6. Move-in inspection with a photographed inventory, then utilities, internet and gas connections.
City Areas families often shortlist Think about
Bengaluru Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, HSR Layout, Koramangala, Indiranagar, Hebbal Commute time at peak hours; deposits have traditionally been higher than other metros
Delhi NCR Gurugram (Golf Course Road, DLF Phases), South Delhi, Noida Air quality season, school bus routes, power backup
Mumbai Bandra, Powai, Lower Parel, Juhu, BKC Rents and space trade-off; monsoon access
Hyderabad Gachibowli, Kondapur, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills Distance to the financial district and schools
Pune Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Baner, Aundh Commute to Hinjewadi or Kharadi
Chennai Adyar, Besant Nagar, Nungambakkam, OMR Commute to the OMR IT corridor; coastal humidity

Areas are examples, not recommendations; your shortlist depends on your brief.

3. School search: matching your child's curriculum

Start 3–6 months ahead. Popular schools fill early. Most international schools start around August, while Indian boards such as CBSE and ICSE start around April. Mid-year places exist but depend on the grade.

Curriculum Usually suits Year usually starts
IB (PYP, MYP, Diploma) Internationally mobile families; easy transfer between countries Around August
Cambridge (IGCSE, A Level) Families from British-system schools Varies: often June–August
American curriculum Families from the US or on US-linked assignments Around August
CBSE / ICSE (Indian boards) Returning NRI families planning to stay; Indian university entrance Around April

What Pikkol does: curriculum and grade mapping, a shortlist based on seats, distance and transport, visit scheduling, application and assessment tracking, and a document checklist covering report cards, transfer certificate, birth certificate, immunisation records and passport or OCI copies. Some schools ask for documents to be attested or apostilled, so we check early.

4. Settling-in: PAN, bank account, mobile and daily life

In your first two weeks, Pikkol helps you set up the things every other step depends on: a mobile number, a PAN, a bank account, utilities and internet. You also get a guided city orientation.

Task What you usually need Pikkol's role
Mobile SIM or eSIM Passport, visa, photo, local address (some operators ask for a local reference) Arrange on day 1–2 of orientation
PAN (tax ID) Passport; proof of address such as OCI card or FRRO registration Prepare and submit the application; track it
Bank account (foreign national) Passport with visa, address proof, photos, employment proof; bank KYC Book the appointment; accompany you
Bank status (returning NRI) Redesignate NRE/NRO accounts to resident; consider an RFC account Paperwork and appointments; refer to your tax adviser
Utilities, internet, cooking gas Rental agreement, ID Transfer or new connections
Healthcare Insurance details Hospital, clinic and pharmacy orientation
Help at home, driver References; police verification Explain norms and process

City orientation (half or full day): neighbourhoods, commute routes, supermarkets and markets, hospitals, schools, banks, transport apps, safety, tipping and local etiquette, with time for the questions you didn't know to ask.

5. Departure services: leaving a city cleanly

When an assignment ends, Pikkol closes things in the right order so you leave on time and get your deposit back.

  • Lease notice and move-out inspection against the move-in inventory
  • Security deposit recovery and dispute support
  • Utility, internet and subscription closures, with final bills
  • Bank account conversion to NRO and any immigration exit formalities, where applicable
  • Packing, storage and onward move, including pets and vehicles
  • Handover of keys and documents to the landlord or your company

Pikkol's Take

Plan the arrival, not just the move.

Most relocations are planned around delivery day, but families don't feel settled when the boxes arrive. They feel settled when the phone works, the bank card works, the children are in school and the commute makes sense. Our advice: put the registration deadline and the school calendar at the centre of the plan, book a serviced apartment for the first few weeks, and only then choose a home. Choosing a home before you've tested the commute is the most expensive mistake we see.

Pikkol can run both under one coordinator, so delivery is timed to your lease and school start.

Do foreigners need to register with the FRRO in India?

Foreign nationals on long-term visas such as employment, student, research or medical visas generally must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office within 14 days of arrival, as endorsed on the visa. Rules changed under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, so check your visa endorsement.

What is the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025?

It is India's consolidated immigration law, in force from 1 September 2025. It replaced the Foreigners Act, 1946, the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939, the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920 and the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act, 2000, and introduced stricter registration and reporting duties, including for employers, universities, hospitals and accommodation providers.

Does my landlord need to report me as a foreign tenant?

Yes. Anyone who provides accommodation to a foreign national, including an OCI cardholder, must submit an online report to the immigration authorities. The Bureau of Immigration now calls it Form III (earlier Form C). Pikkol reminds your landlord and helps make sure it is filed.

Can Pikkol get my Indian visa?

How much security deposit do landlords ask for in Indian cities?
