While moving from one city to another, the last thing that you would want is to find that your household items have been broken or damaged in transit. The only way in which this can be avoided is by packing the items properly before dispatching them. One of the prime determinants of a successful move is how you pack your belongings. If you spend adequate time in packing, then your furniture, electronic items, cutlery crockery, showpieces, and your clothes will reach their destination intact. If you choose the wrong packing materials and rush through the moving process, then these are bound to get badly damaged, often beyond repair.
Common packing Materials:
Boxes: Moving boxes are the commonest packing materials you will need. These provide the external protection to the items being transported. Packing boxes come in various sizes, and you will need to use the size which is closest to the size of the items being packed. Apart from this, ensure that the boxes you choose are lightweight, otherwise, they will become even heavier when full, and you will find it very difficult to carry them around.
Preparing the boxes for use: Before packing the boxes, you have to make them ready for carrying various types of goods, especially the valuable ones. A bottom layer of protective padding is generally added to the boxes using blankets, foam sheets, bubble wraps and corrugated sheets. After this, the items are put inside the boxes and another top layer of protection is added.
Packing: All empty spaces inside the boxes need to be filled tightly with crushed newspaper or foam sheets so that the items inside do not move during transportation.
Sealing: After the boxes have been packed neatly, seal them with adhesive tapes so that they do not open accidentally. It is important to put the adhesive tapes on the top and bottom of the boxes.
Marking: After sealing the boxes, use a permanent marker to write the names of the items that have been packed in the boxes. Don’t forget to specially mark the boxes that have fragile items inside them.
Shrink wrapping: If you are moving across cities, then it will take some time for the boxes to reach the destination. During the journey, the boxes may get loaded and unloaded in several vehicles, increasing the risk of damage. There is also the risk of water damage if you move during the monsoons. Hence, it is best to shrink wrap the boxes to add a layer of special Protection to them during intercity moves.
Other packing materials: Some other common packing materials include corrugated sheets, packing blankets, foam sheets, newspaper rolls, packing grade paper and adhesive tapes.
How to pack some common household items:
Furniture: Before moving furniture, ensure that all its movable parts have been either dismantled or secured tightly. Otherwise, these parts may move during transportation and get damaged. If the furniture can be dismantled completely, these call an expert carpenter to take out the individual parts, which you can wrap separately. If it is fixed furniture, then you will need to use furniture cover, blankets, packing paper, bubble wraps, foam sheets and adhesive tapes to wrap it.
Electronic items: The best way to pack electronic items like TV and music systems is to use the original packaging in which it was sold to you. If you have not retained the original packaging, then get a box which is closest in shape and size to the gadget to be moved. Before putting it into the box, wrap the gadget safely using bubble wrap and foam sheets. You can put in a few sachets of silica Gel inside the box. This will make the moisture evaporate and keep the boxes dry.
Fragile items: For packing fragile items like crockery and cutlery, it is best to use partitioned boxes. These boxes have special dividers added inside them which are in the shape of the dishes, bowls, glasses etc. to be moved. This prevents these fragile items from getting dislocated while transportation and keeps them safe. Every item is packed in newspapers of packing paper and then put into the partitioned boxes. If you do not have partitioned boxes available to you, then fill the gaps with bubble wraps and crushed newspapers as already mentioned above.
Clothes: For intra-city moves special clothes bags are available. Simply put the clothes inside, zip the bags and they will be ready for the move.
