Dharavi, a locality situated in the heart of Mumbai, is also known as one of the largest slums in
the country. Dharavi dates back to 1883, starting around the British colonial era. It grew
partially because of several factories and poor migrants coming from rural Indian, looking for

and diverse in all senses. Dharavi is a huge locality situated between the Western and Central
Railways. Mahim and Bandra lie to its west and Mithi River lies to its north. Antop Hill is
towards the east of Dharavi and Matunga is located towards the South.
Having a very active and informal economy, Dharavi has given rise to several household
enterprises, thus, employing many residents into leather, pottery and textiles. The annual
turnover of this locality stands astonishingly at over US$1 billion! Being a crammed area,
Dharavi also has suffered many disasters and epidemics such as a plague in 1896, which took a
toll of over half of the population of Mumbai. In addition, because of the poor sewage systems,
Dharavi is very vulnerable to floods during monsoons. While Mumbai grew exponentially as a city,
Dharavi got surrounded by various colonies and localities. It has now become a hub for the
